Who came up with the Reebok brand?

Joseph William Foster, the founder of the firm, was born in 1881 and trained as a cobbler. He started working in his bedroom above his father's sweet shop at the age of 14 in 1895, designing some of the initial spiked running shoes.

He founded his business 'J.W. Foster' in 1900 and later was joined with his sons and changed the company name to "J.W. Foster and Sons" in 1910.

During the Second World War, Robert Foster created a small factory in Olympic Works and began to gain a reputation among athletes for his "running pumps." The firm manufactured army boots (which were resumed after the war by the company).

In 1933, Joseph William Foster died, and Joe's widow Maria took over the company. In 1939, Maria handed over leadership of the family firm to Billy and Jim. Once again, conflict disrupted business activities; nevertheless, J W Foster & Sons was able to recover from the situation with Derek Ibbotson setting a Mile world record.

Jim's first son, Jeffrey William Foster (Jeff), Jim's eldest son, came aboard J. W. Foster in 1948 and his younger brother Joseph William (Joe) in 1952. In 1953, Jeff and Joe were drafted into National Service for two years.

After World War II, they returned to J. W. Foster & Sons and discovered a firm that was failing to adapt to the growing presence of competitors such as Adidas and Puma, who had successfully entered the market after the war.

In November 1958, dissatisfied with their father's refusal to expand the family business, the two brothers founded Reebok in Bury.

After Joe and Jeff left J W Foster to start their own firm, Billy died at the age of 58. Jim ran the company at Deane Road until the Olympic Works was demolished to make room for a new Bolton Technical College, which became Bolton University.

J. W. Foster & Sons (Athletic Shoe) Ltd was moved to the north of Bolton and became a sports store. J. W. Foster & Sons operated until 1976, when it was bought by Reebok following his death.

With many goods kept on loan in the Reebok archive at the company's global headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts, the J.W. Foster Tradition continues today as J W. Foster (Heritage) Ltd., with many items held on loan from The Reebok Archive.
